A contraction of "gruesome", a particularly unpleasant state of affairs, or a particularly nasty job, such as cleaning a sump or a blocked toilet.

David: "I cleaned the grit sump yesterday, David. Your turn today, mate."
David: "Awww... man... That's totally groo...."
