Gender neutral term for âmaâamâ or âsir.â Even though âsaâamâ is a portmanteau of the words âmaâamâ and âsir,â âsaâamâ includes all genders and is formal.
Saâam/sadam: a gender neutral, polite attention getter similar to maâam or sir.
*A customer forgets a bag at the counter in a retail store. The cashier finds the customer to bring them their bag, but needs to get their attention first. Because the cashier doesnât know the customers preferred pronouns, they will use saâam to politely catch the customerâs attention without assuming the customerâs gender.*
Cashier: âExcuse me, saâam, but you left your bag on the counter at my register.â
Customer: âOh my, I didnât even realize. Thank you, saâam, and have a great day!â
Cashier: âNo problem, saâam. You also have a great day.â
