"Bongo" is a term used when referring to somebody of African heritage. Despite the word being colloquial, the word too can be used when referring to extravagant behavior in general, regardless of genetic make-up.
The word is often used among peers or friends as a representation of camaraderie and companionship. It has also been known to be used to refer to people with rather dark skin tones, particularly those of African heritage.
The word is viable when referring to:
-Anyone with direct blood relatives who are of great African heritage
-Anyone who hails from the African continent (apart from Caucasian individuals)
-Anyone who is of African heritage, overall*
*When referring to individuals from North Africa, the term should be used loosely, and with a sense of exaggeration as it does not serve as a fact to prove that these individuals are Africans of dark complexions (I.E Bantu's)
The term originated in Gabon, near the 'Minkembe National Park'. The term then spread throughout Central African as a term when referring to members of the Bantu community. The term was then piqued to popularity in South Africa. During the late 2000's to the mid 2010's, It was used as a word to treat refugees hailing from other African nations with contempt. Today it has become a term to represent African pride. It is also accepted as an insult depending on the circumstances, among those who are considered "Bongos" themselves.
Have you made yourself aware of how dark in complexion Chief Keef appeared on stage tonight? He is a true BONGO.
Yes, Meghan Markle is biracial. I believe one of her parents is an African-American. I consider her to be a BONGO.
So Bill Gates seemed unappreciative of Ellen DeGeneres' $20,000 cheque as a gift ? Wow, what a BONGO.
I am indeed aware of the fact that she is actually of direct Moroccan descent. I therefore consider her to be a BONGO.
Greetings. How are you all on this fine day, my fellow BONGOS.
