"GachupÃn" is a derogatory name that is applied in Mexico and Central America to Spaniards. There was also formerly the "cachopÃn" form, now unused. In other parts of Latin America, cachupÃn is used, with the same meaning.
GachupÃn is an eponym derived from a northern Spanish hidalgo surname : the Cachopines , from Laredo , currently Cantabria , and popularized in the golden centuries as a stereotype and literary figure representing the hidalgos, a relatively high social class caricatured as arrogant. The cachopÃn , guachapÃn , cachupÃn and cachupino forms are also registered.
