Originally used by British settlers in New York (New Amsterdam) for the Dutch: it's a combination of the names Jan and Kees, very common Dutch male names.

What's that Dutch bloke called? I want to buy Manhattan from him for 1 dollar.

Oh I don't know, their names are so hard to remember. Just call him Yankee, you can't go wrong then.
