lamers usually link not to the website but only to the content/download. therefore a content provider will have the impact of traffic but not the advantage of receiving page views/ad clicks.
This was especially frowned up in the 90s when traffic was expensive and led to download pre-pages and up to the kind of file share storage providers you still see to day.
content provider: dude, if you lame link my stuff, no one will click on the ads on my page and I have to take it all down eventually.
lamer: but I don't have anything original except that "great" link collection.
content provider: stop lame linking! ( had to include that line, because stemming would be too hard (â_â))
