Trial by Fire

Commonly refers to the ability of someone or something to perform well for the first time under pressure, like the common phrase sink or swim. Can also refer to a firefighter attacking his first blaze, a right of passage in most fire departments.

It’s been a Trial by Fire today for the rookie, he’s answered 13 calls before noon!
