Audichya

By far the most numerous of the Gujarati Brahmins. And is also by far the best type of all the Brahmins of India. Gujarati Brahmins are considered, like Patidars, a privileged caste in Gujarat. (Patels are a common surname of the Patidar caste).

According to the local saying all Audichyás are seers, Audichya sarv Rushiya. Gujarati Brahmins came from northern India and betray this through north Indian surnames (Trivedi, Joshi, Vaidya, etc). The Audichyas are divided into Tolakia Audichyas and Sahasra Audichyas, and the name Audichya or Northerner shows that they entered Gujarat from Upper India. According to their caste traditions they were invited to Gujarát by Mularája, king of Anahilaváda (A.D. 961—996), to help him in holding a sacrifice. When this was over, the king offered them money and grants of lands to induce them to stay in this country. About a thousand (sahasra), who readily agreed, came to be known as Audich Sahasra, while the rest who formed a toli (band) and refused till they were persuaded by further grants, came to be known as Audich Tolakia. Strangely, however, the Sahasras are looked upon as superior in social rank.

The Audichya Sahasras are again sub-divided into Sihora and Sidhporá. The Sidhporá Audichyas are regarded as superior to other Audichyas. Most of the Audich Brahmans were the beggers of alms, but some practiced cultivation, and some were cooks or village priests. Many of them have now received higher education and are working in offices.

Phule: Audichya girls are so beautiful. I saw one on a dating site and instantly fell in love with her. Only problem is that her caste preferences Gujarati Brahmin, Leva Patel, and Vaishnav Vani.

Bhangi: You're definitely out of luck, brother. Audichya females also tend to be very picky and mate only with preferred males of the Gujarati upper castes. And individuals from the state of Gujarat tend to be more specific and particular about what they want.

Bhatt

Very much like the Rajputs who lost out to the Patidars and actually blame them for the loss of their power, the sacerdotal caste of Bhats also lost out in the power struggle and hold a MAJOR grudge.

And while the Rajputs play the blame game and the Bhats hold old historical grudges, the Lewa Patels, the dominant caste In Central Gujarat and also one of the most visible and affluent caste groups in India, go from strength to strength.

The most famous example of a Bhatt is, of course, Alia. That alone says a lot. And she's not even a pure Bhat!

The Bhats were a bardic community of genealogists and mythographers who, during the Mughal and Maratha administration of Gujarat, had come to perform a critical political function: furnishing surety for a range of transactions and activities. The Koli and Rajput rulers had employed the services of Bhats in negotiating revenue payments with Mughal and Maratha administrations of their primary source of collateral.

The administration of Governor Nepean came to regard the influence of the Bhats as an affront to British authority and moral values, and antithetical to the system of direct and efficient government that it sought to install. Through a series of military and judicial confrontations, the Bhats were stripped of their securitization functions, thereby depriving the Koli and Rajput rulers.

Smith: So the Rajputs got dethroned from his position and the Bhatts were stripped of their functions.
Jones: Yeah. By the Patidars/Patels and the British.

Patel

Patels explicitly describe themselves as a “modern” caste and reveal, in their self-description and practices, an entanglement with terms that we would commonly associate with Western epistemes. Their acquired image as the quintessential modern caste predisposes them, for the most part, to a “severe practicality” in the realms of household and farm economics.

Patels are still driven by a desire to acquire social distinction. As in the past, when the upper strata of Patidars had differentiated themselves from the lower levels by contracting hypergamous marriages. The early Patidar families married their daughters to Anavil Brahmins, the 'old aristocracy' of the area, who were tax collectors for the Mughals before the Marathas came.

Frank Heidemann : In the past, the upper strata of Patidars had differentiated themselves from the lower levels by contracting hypergamous marriages.
Vinay Gidwani: Patels are still driven by a desire to acquire social distinction.
