âTo pixâ is a verb created by the process of conversion (zero-derivation) and Anglicization of the Brazilian Portuguese noun âPIX,â which is the name of a new instant payment system adopted by the Central Bank of Brazil in late 2020. A âPIXâ may also simply refer to a transfer made using the PIX service.
As native English speakers who reside and teach English in Brazil began to receive payment via PIX, the verb form emerged as a result of conversion. It has become acceptable for both native English speakers and Brazilian students of English to use the verb form. A verb form does not exist in Portuguese.
âJoão, can you pix me for todayâs class?â âSorry, teacher, I completely forgot to pix you.â
