Bubbe call

A health and welfare phone call between friends, flat mates, or relatives, named for Bubbe (Yiddish word for grandmother), that is a play on the term booty call.

1. Have fun on your booty call tonight, but send me a text when you're back home. If I don't hear from you by noon tomorrow, I'm giving you a Bubbe call! Gotta make sure you're not dead in a ditch on the side of the road!

2. This is your 12 noon Bubbe call. Since you answered, I'll assume you're not dead in a ditch on the side of the road, yes?

3. I just saw your tweet that you're home sick today. This is a Bubbe call; do you need me to bring over some soup for you?

Autocowrecked

When your computer or mobile device's autocorrect function has wrecked what you intended to type by "correcting" it to an incorrect word, sometimes a very wrong word.

Argh! Autocowrecked. That's not what I meant. * incorrect word = correct word

quarters

military "verbal shorthand" for "Confinement to Quarters," most often for medical reasons such as acute viral respiratory infections that are disabling and highly contagious but NOT so severe as to require any hospital stay.

I got the latest Creeping Crud, so doc put me on Quarters for the next three days.

STRAC

1970's US military acronym, still in use today.

Amongst officers: Strategic, Tough, Ready Around the Clock.

Amongst enlisted: SHIT! The Russians are coming!

The second sense referring jocularly to the readiness level that was needed in "rapid deployment" units -- troops who would need to activate/deploy in as little as 2 hours if the Russians really were coming (Cold War)

"You've all got inspection at 0700 hours tomorrow. That's a full gear inspection by the CO, and you BETTER be looking STRAC!"

creeping crud

military slang for highly contagious virii such as colds, stomach bugs, etc. that leave a person with any debilitating combination of non-stop runny nose, coughing up heavy phlegm, vomiting, diarrhea, extreme muscle weakness/pain, etc. The "creeping" part refers to the fact that it seems to make its way through ALL of the ranks eventually.

It's cold and flu season now, so if you get the Creeping Crud - go on sickcall and make sure doc gives you Quarters, because the rest of us don't want it!
