trial beer

The term someone uses to take small samples of beer, normally half pints or less, to avoid actually drinking - either because they can't or wont for whatever reason.

JJ: "What are you drinking?"
Barry: "I think I'll have a trial beer of the Honey Strawberry Sugar Blast first then trial the Organic Orange Sunrise next"
