It means "mother of liberation" from Tibetan སà¾à¾²à½¼à½£ (sgrol) meaning "to cross, to traverse, to pass" combined with འ(ma) meaning "mother", metaphorically meaning "a spiritual crossing to the other side of existence (enlightenment)".
Dolma is also the Tibetan name for a female Bodhisattva (one who is able to reach enlightenment but delays it to help others) and female Buddha, goddess TARA in Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism.
