Respect between writers, or of readers for a writer, based on the quality and substance of their writing. Amount of writing published or number of copies sold can be, but isn't necessarily, a factor, as quantity is not always indicative of value.
I don't care how prolific he is or how many copies he's sold, James Patterson has no sheet cred. He's good at driving plot, but that's about it.

Respect and trust for a person's opinions and recommendations about reading material based on the caliber of their own chosen reading material; can be based on preference of genre, but typically earned by reading stories and novels of subtance.

Whenever I feel like a reading a romantic novel, I ask Maggie. She's got the most shelf cred when it comes to love stories.
