Kmart

While Kmart did indeed file for bankruptcy in 2002, closing those stores enabled Kmart to reinvent itself, provide a larger selection of merchandise and initiate a merger with Sears, now known as Sears Holding Co.

Kmart was originally founded in 1899 by Sebastian S. Kresge as S.S. Kresge Co.

When Kresge opened his first store in 1899, he sold everything for 5 and 10 cents. The low prices appealed to shoppers and allowed him to expand to 85 stores in 1912, with annual sales of more than $10 million.

In 2003 Kmart exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as Kmart Holding Corp and announced the merger with Sears in 2004.

The Company currently employs more than 133,000 associates, a far cry from the staff of 18 first employed at Kresge's five-and dime.

(i.e. a hell of a lot better than Wal-mart, note the definition about Wal-mart's edited CDs.)
