âFaqashâ is a phonetic sound in Somali and was described by Somalis in the North (of Somaliland) to describe the sound Barreâs soldiers boots made against the mud. The people and the rebels eventually began to refer to all government soldiers from Somalia as derogatory âfaqashâ.
Later, as his government became more and more Daarood dominated, the term came to reference members of the clan, specifically members of Barreâs family and sub-clan.
