bate

A “bate” is a date where the primary intent is a casual hookup or a one-night stand. Unlike a “plate,” where there is little expectation, a “bate” is more direct in its purpose. The term plays on the phonetic swap from “date” to “bate” (a nod to the slang for masturbation), emphasizing its sexual nature. A date can start as a standard “date” and naturally turn into a “bate.”

Jamie: “So, how was your date?”
Jordan: “Oh, it ended up being more of a bate, we both knew what we wanted.”
—
Sophie: “Are you going on a date with that guy from the bar?”
Claire: “A date? Nah, he's cute but all I want with him is just a bate.”

plate

A “plate” (Platonic Date) is a planned date where the person doesn’t really expect anything romantic or serious to come out of it. It’s more of a casual meet-up out of curiosity, politeness, or even boredom. It carries a “no pressure” vibe, and the outcome is uncertain. A date can start as a “plate” and evolve into something more romantic or even into a “bate” if the chemistry shifts.

Emma: “So, you’re going on a date tonight?”
Leo: “Nah, not really. It’s just a plate. We’re grabbing a drink, but I don’t think there’s anything romantic there.”
—
Alex: “How was your date last night?”
Chris: “Eh, it was more of a plate than anything. We just talked and went home separately.”
