Medical care that affirms the gender of an individual. This can include hormone supplements, hormone blockers, and, in some cases, surgical operations. For transgender individuals, this is usually called HRT, or Hormone Replacement Therapy (see example 1). Gender-affirming care is not exclusive to transgender individuals; it also encapsulates cisgender men and women who may have an imbalance of their body's hormones â testosterone and estrogen, respectively (see example 2).
Example 1
Sara booked and attended an intake appointment for her to receive gender-affirming care, which included estradiol and a testosterone blocker.
Example 2
Tony's doctor diagnosed him with gynecomastia, and Tony, who was born as a man and knew he was always a man, sought gender-affirming care via liposuction to correct his chest.
