The first day of Bengali calendar has been observed for thousands of years by Bengali Hindus with cultural and religious fervor although nowadays people of other religions also celebrate this festival. It was first officially and broadly observed by Shashanka— the first great King of Bengal. People of West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, and Bangladesh celebrate this day.

On the day of Poila Boishakh, people worship God Ganesh and Devi Lakshmi for the prosperity of the world.
