vanity breeding

Purposely conceiving a human child with the intention of raising a person who resembles themselves literally and possibly figuratively.

"Despite the common knowledge of millions of starving orphans in the world, many wealthy and seemingly well-educated couples continued to engage in the tradition of vanity breeding. Their culture not only celebrated it, but also regarded those who chose not to with disappointment, and sometimes even contempt."

Vanity Post

A self-doting submission to Urban Dictionary, usually under the title of one’s own name, for the sole purpose of stroking the adolescent ego of a budding sociopath.

“Billy spent all of class writing a rambling vanity post, because that’s what happens when your parents tell you you’re so special but also don’t discipline”.

vanity strength

The appearance of having great strength, but really having the strength of a sick nine year school girl.

Person 1: Did you see how strong Tom got over the summer.
Person 2: Ugh. It’s vanity strength. He helped me move and couldn’t even pick up a box of clothes.

Person 1: Man what a bitch.

Numerical Vanity

When superstitious (or arguably vain) people would dearly bid for items like car plates, phone numbers, and house units that display “auspicious” or “lucky” numbers, or a string of “patternful” digits.

Guesstimate how many million bucks the digital or numerical vanity business is worth every year in Asia and the Middle East.

vanity boutique

A small, boutique-type store that sells chintzy trinkets and ugly jewelry that you couldn't imagine anyone wanting to buy. These stores are almost always run by middle-aged women with rich husbands who are in need of something to do, so the lack of sales don't force them to close down like other unsuccessful businesses.

"What's Trish up to lately?"
"Since the kids have gone back to school, she opened a little store that sells bedazzled sweaters for dogs and bows she makes by hot gluing dollar-store ribbon to hairclips."
"Sounds like a total vanity boutique."
"It is. She hasn't made a sale yet. But it gives her something to do since her husband is always gone on business trips."
