A used book (overall condition unimportant) that an avid reader "rescues" from a library sale, used-bookstore, clearance shelf, or home of a downsizing relative, without any immediate need for it but in the fear it will be pulped otherwise. The term puppy-dog comes from the similarity to rescuing an animal and taking it home to a house already full of cats and dogs, for fear it would otherwise be euthanized.

Book characters are often extremely cool or there is a character in the books who is. so "Straight out the books" means someone who is extremely cool.

The state in which one finds themselves when they begin to have so many one-night-stands or fuck buddies that that these individuals merge into one to resemble a relationship- devoid of real emotion. This is either an intentional way of life (and all power to you if it is) or adversely extremely detrimental to ones self-esteem and perhaps a barrier between you and someone who wants to be with you because, consciously or subconsciously, you define yourself as 'taken'.
