emo

Emo is a rock/punk subgenera of music, evolved into a subcultural scene for depressed teenagers.

Emo, as a music style, was originally a type of music coined by the post-hardcore band "Rites of Spring" to describe their type of music. As years passed, the original genera began to die out. However, the tag "emo" remained. It began to describe many bands such as Hawthorne Heights, My Chemical Romance, and Taking Back Sunday.

Modern-day emo is often characterized by depressive lyrics, often criticized as whiny; screaming in some or many parts of songs (which goes into screamo, a subgenera of emo); distorted guitars, often using two or three guitars to create dissonant harmonies; drums that in most cases accentuate the guitar rhythm, rather than create its own separate rhythm; bass, which shares the dissonant, minor qualities of the guitar, but has lost importance in many of the bands.

Lyrical content of the music often contains thematic elements and undertones of self-inflicted wounds, depression, suicide, hopelessness, being murdered, stalking, being overly fixated on past relationships, and being tortured. Emo lyrics are often criticized by the public as a bad influence on the teenage population and encourage self-inflicted pain, depression, and suicide.

As a subculture for teenagers, emo has evolved into an entire scene characterized by long, black hair with fringes off the the side, tight pants, the color black in general, horn-rimmed glasses, and excessive amounts of black eyeliner.

The "emo" look is marketed towards the masses, rather than only the depressed, angsty teenagers. It is considered "cool" by many to look "emo"

The band Silverstein, often referred to as "emo," provides an example of the emo look.

Emo

Desensitised word that is used by any person who likes, or is affiliated with rap,or who enjoys crap music in generla. It is a term used to encompass any form of rock music in a derogatory way. Originally referring to a narrow genre of Emotive metal and hard rock, it was used by MTV and other music channels to describe a bunch of bands who dress a certain way. People who listen to a certain type of music BECAUSE of the way they dress(ie skinny jeans, tight shirts) can be described as Emos(note the diffence to dressing a certain way to reflect their music choice). Emo is now a style of dress more than anything. Emos can also be described as hissy cutters. Emo was originally a type of good ol' fashioned pioneer rock and metal. But now its a word that is thrown around and makes all true rocker cringe.

Rap Guy: man, you listen to system of a down and Alice Copper and stuff? What an Emo!
Rock Guy: Shut up you inferior being, you know nothing. May your children be consumed by a thousand hungry spiders.

emo

Emo is not people who cut themselves or hate the world. Emo's do not hate themsevles either. Emo is not another word for gothic. A person who cuts themself is a cutter not an emo. Emo people are realist. Just because you are emo that doesn't mean you don't believe in God. People misunderstand emo people so much. I just wanted to inform people what emo is not.

Depression is also not alway emo!

Emo

Short for emotional-hardcore:
An 80's subgenre of hardcore punk which in itself is a genre of punk rock, used to define creative, angsty, and melodromatic bands that WERE PUNK, yet at the same time, to creative and knowing too many guitar chords to be classified as punk.

The term was invented by fans of Rites of Spring, a hardcore punk band looking to break out of the D.C. hardcore punk scene and create a unique sound.

Emotional-hardcore, often shortened to emocore, or emo, was very short lived, as were many of the bands in it.
After emo came indie, post-hardcore, screamo, and post-emo.

The term has been borrowed by asshole teenagers that constantly shop at Hot Topic, wear skinny jeans, black eye liner, and hear infront of their eyes, and listen to nothing but pop punk, metalcore, the pussified version of death metal, and post-hardcore.

How to identify emo:
-IF THE BAND IS NOT A PUNK BAND, THEN THEY ARE NOT AN EMO BAND.

-IF THE BAND USES GUTTURAL VOCALS, HAS A BREAKDOWN, OR HAS A DOUBLE BASS, THEY AREN'T EMO.

-IF THE LYRICS ARE "POETIC" PIECES OF CRAP ABOUT EX-GIRLFRIENDS, SUICIDE, OR SUICIDE, THEY AREN'T EMO.

-YOU ARE NOT EMO.

-IF THE BAND IS AROUND TODAY, AND IS INFLUENCED BY HAWTHORNE HEIGHTS, THEY ARE NOT EMO.

The Northern Eastern SCENE KID that wears nothing but black is somehow mistaken for emo, but is sadly, still scene kid.

Scene kid, "I just bought the new Alesana CD, 'Where Myth Fades to Legend, they're so emo, Shawn cries at the end of track 9 *pretends to be sad*'".

Kid who knows better, "Woah, there are still emo bands around? I didn't even know you liked punk".

Scene kid, "No, they aren't punk, they're a metal/emo/screamo band. Shawn is so hott."

Kid who knows better, "You're a fucking idiot."

Some real emo bands are:
-Rites of Spring
-Cap'n Jazz
-Mineral
-Frodus

Some bands idiotically mistaken for emo are:
-Fall Out Boy
-Hawthorne Heights
-Alesana
-Saosin
-My Chemical Romance
-30 Seconds to Mars
-Bring Me the Horizon
-Attack! Attack! (the U.S. band)
-Drop Dead Gorgeous
-Suicide Silence
-A Day to Remember
-Saosin
-The Jonas Brothers (it's been said)
-Paramore
-Flyleaf
-Bullet for My Valentine
-Good Charlotte
-Sunny Day Real Estate

emo

a term coined to describe the emotional (there is a rare misconception that "emo" is an abbreviation of UNemotional) or "angsty" subculture of the teenager; "emo" is generally associated with dark clothing, dark make-up, dark, heavily rimmed glasses, chucks, images of depression such as cutting and sometimes anorexia (due to the fact that emo is also associated with tight clothing), and certain hairstyles (typically long, sideswept, as in diagonal, bangs that tend to obscure the eye(s)); the emo philosophy combines a certain existentialism and classic tragedy and expresses these ideals through a genre of music

Happy child: Dude, what is emo?
Emo child: Emo is a philosophy of life that takes the idea that life has no meaning, and does it in such a way to incorporate the melodrama inspired by Greek tragedy.
Happy child: Dude ...
Emo child: What?
Happy child: Don't try to justify it. It's still moronic. Go cut your hair.
Emo child: You're just jealous because I'm skinnier than you are.
Happy child: That's what you think.
Emo child: =O
