fool's errand

A task which is widely known to be unwise, yet is carried out against a person's better judgement.

He went to her house to tell her he loved her, even though her husband was home. It was a fool's errand.

Internet errands

Specific tasks that one completes through use of the internet.

Tasks are usually brief and may include communicating (via email, facebook, twitter, blogs), shopping, performing research, online banking, etc.

Ex 1: John: "What are you up to today? Would you like to grab some lunch with me?"

Jane: "I'm sorry, I can't. I have a bunch of internet errands I have to get done."

Ex 2: Jill: "Jack it's 8pm, you're still wearing your pajamas and you haven't left that computer! Have you been wasting all day surfing the web?!"

Jack: "Whoa, chill out, I've been busy. I paid the bills, emailed John and Jane about camping next weekend, booked us flights to visit your parents, posted some items to sell on craigslist, bought a groupon to your favorite restaurant, submitted my research paper, and I ordered you that necklace you were eyeing at the store for half-price off of amazon.com."

Jane: "Well, I cleaned the tub."

errand circle

Completing various errands that require one to travel all over one's town, often in no particular order, and with new errands popping up in between the ones that were planned ahead of time. The location of the stops do not necessarily make a circle, and stopping at one particular place more than once can be considered part of the circle.

Man, I covered every street in town with that errand circle, and I must've stopped at Wal-Mart at least three times!

run errands

A trip to get or do something, especially for something you don't really like to do or have to do for someone else. It's not like shopping!
