A rehearsal birthday is spontaneously given when the person with the upcoming birthday is in danger of buying the exact same gift that you have already gone to a lot of trouble to acquire.
"We had to throw a rehearsal birthday as Emma announced she was going to get a new skateboard today - I bought one for her 3 weeks ago."
