See a man about a horse

It means to politely excuse yourself from a situation to go to the restroom or buy a drink. It originated from men disappearing to go bet on horse or dog races. See a man about a dog means the same thing.

The earliest confirmed publication is the 1866 Dion Boucicault play Flying Scud in which a character knowingly breezes past a difficult situation saying, "Excuse me Mr. Quail, I can't stop; I've got to see a man about a dog." In a listing for a 1939 revival on the NBC Radio program America's Lost Plays, Time magazine observed that the phrase is the play's "claim to fame".

During Prohibition in the United States, the phrase see a man about a horse was most commonly used in relation to the consumption or purchase of alcoholic beverages.

Look a gift horse in the mouth

It's Roman slang: "Noli equi dentes inspicere donati". For example, you can find it in St. Jerome's Commentary on the Epistle to the Ephesians, written in the 5th century.

You look in a horse's mouth to determine its age and/or health. So if someone gives you a horse, and you look in it's mouth, it's like looking for a price tag. It's rude!

Lucius: I bought you this tunic in Thebes for your birthday.
Quintus: Thanks dude. Hey, look, the seam has really cheap thread.
Lucius: Noli equi dentes inspicere donati.
Quintus: Wha?
Lucius: It's Latin. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
Quintus. Oh yah, right. Mea culpa.

whipping a pile of horse bones

The phrase "whipping a dead horse" means to attempt to revive a moot point or issue. "Whipping a pile of horse bones" means to keep making futile and pointless attempts to revive interest in something that no one has cared about for so long its rotted away into a skeleton of its former self.

AKA: The Simpsons

Seasons 1 through 6 were the best. By season 8, FOX and Matt Groening were whipping a dead horse. Which means for the last 10 seasons they have been whipping a pile of horse bones.
