A "caste" that did not stratify into that concrete form until the late nineteenth century but are currently an economic force to be reckoned with. Its members dominate all sorts of sectors from pharmaceuticals, port development, to the steel industry and the food business, among others. Name an industry prominent in and out of Gujarat and it would be difficult not to find a Patel associated with it. Markers to the influence of Patels are ubiquitous. And some might say unnecessary.
The Patels emerged as a caste through hypergamous marriage practices and complex relations with other subordinate castes in the region. Lewa Patels, the Dominant Caste In Central Gujarat, Are Also One Of The Most Visible And Affluent Caste Groups In India And Boast A Global Diasporic Presence (see Gidwani, Capital, Interrupted). The Lewa Patels emerged as an affluent caste through the articulation of caste, class and gender relations with the British Government and other caste groups in their socio political sphere. Hypergamous relations of the Patel caste with the Patidar caste were socially imperative in order to establish their stranglehold in Gujarat.

The caste has several subdivisions, and these subdivisions differ from each other in terms of their origin and in terms of rank and of social structure. Their mental and cultural make-up is a curious mixture of feudal mentality and capitalist outlook, marking them out as a very aggressive, patronising, ruthless and achieving class in Gujarat or elsewhere.
The Lewa Patels of central Gujarat are a global diaspora and one of the most visible and affluent caste groups in India, and some of India’s wealthiest families, such as the Premjis, carry the patidari lineage.
60% of U.S. hotel and motel owners are Gujaratis, of which many have their last name as Patels.
Mukesh and Anil Ambani’s mother, although not a Lewa, is of patidari origin, and the daughter of Karsanbhai Patel of Nirma (a Kadva) has married a Lewa. Azim Premji's son Rishad Premji’s mother-in-law is a Lewa, and his father-in-law is most likely an Anavil Brahmin.
Anavil Brahmins in fact are comparable to the Patidars and are to be bracketed with them.

Patels explicitly describe themselves as a “modern” caste and reveal, in their self-description and practices, an entanglement with terms that we would commonly associate with Western epistemes. Their acquired image as the quintessential modern caste predisposes them, for the most part, to a “severe practicality” in the realms of household and farm economics.
Patels are still driven by a desire to acquire social distinction. As in the past, when the upper strata of Patidars had differentiated themselves from the lower levels by contracting hypergamous marriages. The early Patidar families married their daughters to Anavil Brahmins, the 'old aristocracy' of the area, who were tax collectors for the Mughals before the Marathas came.
