Emotional AIDS

Noun.

A disease generally caused by a former significant other that the sufferer can't (legally or in some other way) remove from his/her life or remove him/herself from, that results in being unable to function normally in an emotional sense ever again.

Friend 1: You're so pretty and smart and you have a good job now, why don't you start dating again?

Friend 2: I made the mistake of sleeping with him and it seems to be my kid's father's goal to make me suffer for it for the rest of my life. Every day it's some new kind of hell, and I can't take my kid and leave because the court orders say we have to stay. I can't even THINK about dating anyone, I'm such a mess. I couldn't drag someone else into this.

Friend 1: OMG, you have the Emotional AIDS!

Friend 2: :D! It's funny, because it's TRUE!

emotion junkie

A person who obsessively indulges in social issues to stimulate strong internal emotions for their drug-like effect. This can be an unconscious behavior; the emotion junkie will often be able to rationalize support for their cause/drug of choice.

What separates emotion junkies from normal activists is a distinct lack of empathy towards other nearly identical causes, and flitting from cause to cause as the emotional intensity of each waxes and wanes.

Emotion junkies are unable to give a coherent rational explanation for their obsession with any given cause. However not all people who lack rational understanding of what they're doing are emotion junkies.

Animal rights groups are fertile ground for emotion junkies. Members of such groups who live to emote, but are disinterested in strategy or other organizational aspects tend to be emotion junkies.

People who are suddenly obsessed with certain celebrities, particularly after they've died. For example a person who spends vast amounts of time and energy with tributes to deal celebrities, and are active in rumor mongering myths about the circumstances of their deaths.

People who obsess over one and only one egregious crime reported in the news, but pay no attention at all to other, equally egregious crimes in the news.

Emotional Shrapnel

The detritus that gets stuck in a person's soul when another person has a complete meltdown and spreads their BS across the widest available arc becaue they can't keep their emotions in check.

A close kin to free floating anxiety - but with more oomph.

When your boss has a cow for something that wasn't your fault and really rips into you. You've got to take the hit without a flakjacket. The "Emotional Shrapnel" can lodge deep and cause future issues.

Emotional Inertia

The amount of emotional stability associated with an individual as it pertains to how dramatic an event is required to move them to an extreme emotional state.

His girlfriend seems to be able to be moved to tears by such a simple thing as a greeting card commercial. That chick has absolutely no emotional inertia!

emotional blackout

Actions completed while terribly upset that you have no memory the next day.

Sorry I sent that email about your similarities to a person with narcissistic personality disorder; I don't even remember it. Must've been an emotional blackout.
