A huge realm of streets, buildings, people, etc., sitting on western Long Island, all of Staten and Manhattan Islands, and the peninsula to the north of Manhattan Island, as well as several other isles at the mouth of the Hudson River in North America. My birthplace is somewhere in there.
Me: Penn Station is in New York City.
She: Oh? Where in New York?
Me: Um, 34th St. Midtown. Take the train into New York on Amtrak or on NJ Transit or the LIRR, and you shouldn't miss it.

If you can make it here, it's probably because you have rich parents that spoil you.
"I'm from New York City"
"So that probably means you've never had to worry about finances ever in your life?"
NOTE: this excludes all the poor people who live in NYC, of which there are many.

I'm going into New York City to view an exhibition at the Museum of National History, seeing a Broadway play, and going clubbing afterwards.

Great fucken' city on the east coast. Pricey as hell(that comparison makes no sense I know), but well worth it. Home to many great bands, shows, events and anything you can think of. Also has some of the highest quality men. Speciifically in Greenwich and East Village.
New York City is a cool as town, motherfucker...now back the hell off.

The largest and most diverse city in America. With a population over 8 million, and a reputation for blunt honesty, graft and aggression, New York City is actually one of America's friendliest places, with a proud citizen base committed to cooperation. An excellent example is September 11th, 2001, when New Yorkers of all backgrounds automatically pulled together to rescue the injured, rebuild infrastructure, and provide America backbone to withstand the event.
New York City is the most talked-about, thought-about, and most-written and sung about city in the world. New songs, movies, television programs and plays are created about it daily. Moving to, surviving, then living well in New York City is nearly universally seen as "having arrived".
New Yorkers are brash, impulsive, good-natured and approachable. They like meeting people and are not shy about making new friends. Friendships can be struck up in public (i.e. on line for a bus, or at a bank) when two or more unrelated New Yorkers notice something unusual and make a (usually sarcastic) comment to one another.
New York City: Frank Sinatra with a skyline.
Person 1: New York, New York
A hell of a town
The Bronx is up and the Battery's down
The people ride in a hole in the ground
New York, New York...
It's a hell of a town!
Person 2: The example should include the words "New York City". You forgot "city".
Person 1: Lenny didn't use city in that song.
Person 2: Yeah, but he didn't write the lyrics either.
Person 1: Stop arguing with me on the train, you must be from New York City or something.
