Derogatory term for black people. Similar to "nigger." Originally a shortened form of the word "raccoon," used in reference to the animal. The black eye masks and noctural habits of the animal paralleled the characteristics of typical robbers and thiefs. The stereotype was then applied to black people.
FORREST: Hi, Earl! Whatβs goinβ on?
EARL: Coons are tryinβ to get into school.
FORREST: Coons!? Well, raccoons try to get on our back porch, Momma just chase βem off with a broom.
EARL: Not raccoons, you idiot, niggers. And, they want to go to school with us.
FORREST: (with much surprise) With us? They do?

Coon is an abbreviated term for racoon, majorly derived from the word 'coonhound'. Coons are small nocturnal carnivores (Procyon lotor) of North America that are chiefly grey, they have black masks and bushy ringed tails. They live chiefly in trees, and have a varied diet including small animals, fruits, and nuts.
This is often perceived as a derogatory term for black people, however, the word is completely innocent as long as you are talking about the small, furry animal.
I haven't heard that in a coon's age.
