See also "Jumping the Shark" as the original idiom, which was coined in 1985 by Jon Hein in response to a 1977 episode from the fifth season of the American sitcom Happy Days, in which Fonzie (Henry Winkler) jumps over a shark while on water-skis. The phrase is pejorative and is used to argue that a creative outlet or work appears to be making a misguided attempt at generating new attention or publicity for something that is perceived once to have been widely popular, but is no longer.

It's also a phrase used in the fraternity world when an active member puts his own status on the line for a rushee. He tells the house that he is "jumping the couch" for a rushee, and that the next vote to allow the rushee into the house is a simultaneous vote to keep the active in the house. Direct opposite of blackball.
After several unsuccessful votes to get his friend into his fraternity, John "jumped the couch" for Sam, but the fraternity still voted Sam down, so John had to leave the fraternity forever in disgrace.
