punk rock

A "musical" movement that pretty much consisted of playing really bad music very very fast. People seeking individuality started saying that they enjoyed these bands as a way to seperate them from the crowd, when there was no possible way that anybody could enjoy the music. While some good bands have come out of the movement (namely The Clash, The Ramones, NOFX, The Presidents of the United States of America, and Green Day), the majority of it is loud pointless noise.

One of the worst elements of punk is the "hardcore" movement led by bands such as Black Flack and DOA, which was made of a bunch of skinheaded racist anti-semites who liked punching each other at shows. The modern "hardcore" movement is even worse.

of some real music: Dream Theater, Symphony X, BB King, Iron Maiden, Robben Ford, Aretha Franklin, Arch Enemy, Into Eternity, Alice Cooper, Rhapsody, Manowar, Muddy Waters, Poison, Bon Jovi, Dio, The Blue Oyster Cult... so on

dock rock

when one group of males on a beach or dock throw rocks at another less-liked member of the group, often times in a canoe or some other floatable 60-100 feet offshore. The object of the game is to either hit the target with rocks or get them wet by splashing them if you're a crappy shot. This game is best played while intoxicated.

Jim: Why are you throwing rocks at poor Ted out in the canoe?
Tommy: I'ts dock rock! Grap a rock and join in!

math rock

a band that uses a formula to write a song. Usually referring to bands influenced by Rush, Helmet, King Crimson, etc, which use complicated repeating rhythms, or highly intellecutalized beats based on some kind of math formula.

Dude, those guys are the sons of mathrock with their beats.

Rush wrote a song called YYZ, in which the beat is morse code for YYZ. That IS mathrock.

Alternative Rock

Also called Post-Grunge, Alternative Rock was a style that record labels and media embraced after the short lived but dominant Grunge movement by the Seattle four (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mother Love Bone/Pearl Jam). The very early and very heavily umfluenced are the only I would call post-grunge, such as: Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, Candlebox. Alternative Rock has become the most played music on modern rock stations and has in the last about 20 years has essentially with few exeptions has taken over the world of rock as it was once known. Like it or not it's all over the radio, and all over the stores.
(Rest in Peace: Layne Staley, Kurt Cobain, Mike Starr, and Andrew Wood. You were truly the inspiration of a generation along with: Jerry Cantrell, Chris Cornell, Eddie Vetter, and David Grohl who are still rocking.)

There are to many Alternative Rock bands to list but a few include: The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Staind, Queens of the Stone Age.

Rocking out

Doing everything in ones power to draw attention to themselves.

Someone singing a Saves the Day song at the top of their lungs in front of about 20 people, not giving a damn what they think, could be construed as rocking out.
