Jersey Shore

Popular term used to describe the Atlantic Ocean coastline of the State of New Jersey in the United States. New Jersey natives who are planning to go to the area often say they are going "down the shore". The term "Jersey Shore" is often shortened to simply "The Shore" by natives of New Jersey (just as the name of the state is sometimes shortened to just Jersey). The Jersey Shore is composed of the coastal communities of (from north to south) Monmouth, Ocean, Atlantic and Cape May counties. Though the city of Cape May has been a summer retreat since the 1760's, the Jersey Shore did not become a truly popular summer resort area until the mid-19th century, when railroads made it relatively easy for people to travel to the region. Summer tourism accounts for a large percentage of the economies of the four Jersey Shore counties, especially in Atlantic (home of Atlantic City) and Cape May counties (Cape May County's economy is almost entirely dependent on tourism). Jersey Shore locals sometimes refer to summer tourists as bennies (most often heard in Monmouth and Ocean counties) or shoobies (generally used in Atlantic and Cape May counties). Visitors to the Jersey Shore often ask why the region is called "shore" and not "beach." The truth is, nobody knows.

People from across the United States enjoy spending part of their summer at the Jersey Shore.

North Jersey

The highly evolved, socially, culturally, and intellectually advanced northern half of New Jersey. Unlike South Jersey folk, when we speak, we communicate intelligent, meaningful thoughts that are not muddied by some pseudo-Philly/Alabama accent. Our neighborhoods are beautiful and historic with green lawns, towering maples and tasteful homes. We do not consider a trailer park a "community." Our time is occupied by endeavours much greater than smoking weed and guzzling cheap beer in a clearing while yammering on endlessly about the Eagles. In North Jersey you can go out to dinner every night for a month and never have the same type of food twice. South Jersey is pretty much all hoagies and Tasty Cakes. Our public schools are consistently tops in the nation, and produce people who are highly successful in their chosen fields. North Jersey is a wonderful, livable place, and any objective outsider would choose to settle here over South Jersey every time. After all, the shore is just a quick car ride from any town in Bergen County. When you're done, you have the luxury of driving home to your amazing Victorian up north. Whereas Pineys are faced with the grim reality of piling, shirtless, into their beat-up truck and returning to a nasty "mobile home community." But not before a stop at the local Wawa for Miller Lite, Marlboros, and a tin of Copenhagen for Grandma.

Me: "Chris, if you and Jennie are interested, Sue and I are headed down to Wildwood for the weekend."

Chris: "No thanks, I'll just watch Deliverance on Netflix instead. North Jersey is far superior"

New Jersey

The state with the cheapest gas in the country.. and we don't even have that 'self-serve' shit.

If that's not a good example of one of the many reasons NJ is a really good state... I don't know what is.

Oh and. By the way. We are -not- all Italian, even in South Jersey.

New Jersey's Regular Unleaded gas Price is like.. what? $2.79? Compared to.. what, over $3 in NY?

Exactly.

North Jersey

The best place ever. We use SPRINKLES, not jimmies, we like the yankees/mets, not the eagles, and we like subs, not hoagies.I come from there, trust me, it IS the best place ever. I love it there.

New Jersey

Stereotypes: We all live by malls, factories are everywhere, we apparently have an accent that we've never heard of before, we all are Italian and gel our hair, we are just a giant suburb of NY and Philly, we all smoke alot and we must come from Newark or Atlantic City because those are the only two NJ cities you know.

The Truth: I can't speak for all of NJ but I do live within 45 minutes of 3 malls, but what's so bad about that? Factories are only in Northeast Jersey that is real close to NYC, and they manufacture half the shit you buy, we have to put them somewhere. No one ever says "Joisey", we say Jurzee and the accent you think we have is more like a crushing combonation of Staten Island and Boston. Jersey Accents are more subtle and most people talk like they're from Philly or NY. We aren't all Italian, infact only 17% of NJ is Itailian but yeah I am Italian but there's nothing wrong with that, and no we don't all gel our hair or wear Gucci sunglasses. We are like a giant suburb of NY/Philly but with attitude, our own cities and towns, and a beach. And No we aren't all from Newark or AC,there a lot of towns in Jersey that I've never heard of before and I lived here for all my life.

Out-Of-Stater: New Jersey sucks.
Jersey Kid: Have you ever even been here?
Out-Of-Stater: Yeah I drove by Newark on my way to NYC
Jersey Kid: That's not the real New Jersey, that's like going to Compton and saying that you've seen all of California, or going to inner city Detroit and saying you've seen all of Michigan.
