A genre of animation originating in Japan.
For some reason, it has gained a large following of illiterate prepubescents as well as angsty teens who feel the need to justify the fact that they're watching an animation, normally done by verbally attacking whoever says they don't like it. Usually, this is achieved by feverishly rattling off a list of anime episodes (or whatever the fuck they're called) that supposedly have mature themes. They always seem to think that makes them less pathetic; it really only makes them more pathetic — especially in the case of hentai, which is just fucking perverted. The very fact that there is a well known and established genre of pornography based off of cartoons does not make the non-explicit cartoons — or the people who watch them — look very good.
Moreover, anime cartoons portray most of their characters in a very unrealistic fashion. Most girls have enormous breasts, heads, and annoyingly glittery bug eyes that are supposed to look attractive but really make them look immature and/or stupid.
Anime is fucking awful; the graphics are shit; and the fans are retards.

In fact, it's so retarded that people in its country of origin, Japan, hate and shun upon the said basement dwellers, also known as otaku.
You'll often see people saying that it is not porn, however, it is not uncommon to find underage girls talking about sexually suggestive themes, even in "normal" anime.
Hentai is if anything even more retarded, you will commonly find:
a) chicks with titanic oversized tits.
b) legal child porn, also called lolicon/shotacon.
c) schoolgirls getting raped by tentacles and taking oversized dicks

Anime, as defined in North America, has a distinct art style, often featuring large eyes, small noses, and bright colors. Animation from Japan is geared towards a Japanese audience, which has looser censorship standards, allowing nudity, violence, and mature themes in programming for children and teens; this is perfectly acceptable in Japan. Only a relatively small percentage of anime is pornographic (see hentai).
Unlike Disney animated movies and Saturday morning cartoons in America, Japanese anime is not always made for and marketed to children. Some anime have complex storylines and characters, exploring mature themes. Every genre is represented in anime, from drama to comedy to romance, fantasy to horror.
"Japanimation" is a synonym for anime, but is not used as much.
