graffiti

Thoughtless, callous, and spiteful scribbling of a moronic, ugly, most often politically or artistically meaningless, and often illegible tag on public property, be it the sidewall of a residential apartment or the security grate of a storefront, done by witless adolescents who are hell-bent on keeping their ghetto neighborhood a shthole, or vindictively transforming more pleasant neighborhoods to such.

Gee, all that graffiti "art" makes the South Bronx look really nice, doesn't it? There's a real batch of fcking Michalangelo's at work down there. Write on your own sh!t, azzholes.

graffiti

Vandalism of public property in the form of words or pictures, often with spray paint or magic marker.

Usually contains tags, the artist's name, to mark his/her or his/her group's territory. Graffiti also contains messages of rebellion, anarchy, promotion of drug use and racial hatred.

Writing is almost always stylized and is commonly written in large bubble letters or twisted lines that overlap each other and contain sharp serifs.

According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, graffiti is โ€œan inscription or drawing made on some public surfaceโ€ฆa message or sloganโ€ฆโ€ As an artist, graffiti provides a platform for self-expression, in which the context of urban existence is directly informed, referenced and influenced by. As a student, graffiti was the only art form that provided representation of my community, my music, and my values. As an educator, graffiti has the potential to engage youth with familiar priorities of urban identity, agency, and navigation. I propose graffiti is a containment of identity, as defined by Margot Waddell, by allowing me to build an identity based purely on the merit of my efforts, liberating me away the marginalization of my physical identity. โ€œTagging is not simply an act of vandalism or violence; it is a social practice with its own rules and codes โ€“ a literacy practice imbued with intent and meaning.โ€ โ€“ MacGillvray & Curwen

graffiti

altering the appearance of any property but your own. Typically done with paint, permanent marker, stickers (slaps), stencils, sculptures or the blood of a goat.

Leaving your mark on anything in any way is considered graffiti, according to the law.

If you take a can of spray paint and write your name on the windshield of an ambulance, or across the crotch of the Big Boys drive in sign that is considered graffiti.

Many graffiti artist work years perfecting their craft and will get permission from business owners and city officials to paint "pieces" on walls or billboards, others still prefer the adrenaline rush of bombing city streets illegally.
