Giving the gears is to tease someone by giving them a bit of a hard time but not in a harsh or unkind way.
They were giving me the gears because I went golfing with the boss.
1. To put forth all of one's energy and effort into something; to give it one's best effort; to try as hard as one can.
2. Words of encouragement.
The statistics test was really difficult, but I gave it my all anyway and ended up getting an A!
