Heavy Metal

A form of Hard Rock that began with Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Purple Haze in the late 1960s and early 70s. Metal is considered the Biggest of the three main forms of Hard Rock, followed by Punk then Grunge. Heavy Metal is composed of big, aggresive sounds produced primarily by electric guitars, bass guitars, and drums. THe vocals are generally very guttural (hoarse and deep voice sounds) or high pithced and shrieking. Metal has almost countless sub-genres including, but not limited to, Hair/Glam Metal, Speed Metal, Thrash, Classic Metal, Nu Metal, Gothic Metal, Black MEtal, Folk Metal, Progressive, and many more.

Some of the greatest Heavy MEtal Bands include Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron MAiden, AC/DC, Anthrax, Metallica, KISS, Motley Crue, and Alice Cooper

Metal Fag

A loser that thinks he's cool because he listens to extremely shitty underground metal (usually Black Metal and Death Metal) and hates almost every band that's even somewhat succesful.

Metal fag: Black Metal and Death Metal are the only good genres of music, fuck Nu Metal and Metalcore, Metallica are sellouts.
Me: Dude shut the fuck up and get a life. No one gives a fuck about you or your shitty opinion

death metal

Music for those who consider brilliant technical mastery of an instrument more important than actual songwriting.

"Music with careful subtlety and texture is for pussies. I prefer death metal."

metal tits

The severe disease when you have uncontrollably rocket sized nipple rocks. They are very noticeable and fairly unattractive.

Weston: Holy crap Geoff, do you have metal tits?

Geoff: Yeah, I do, I guess Im a little horny

false metal

Metal that does not come from the heart. Metal in which the artists show no passion. Metal which is made for the sole purpose of being marketed and whored out to every mindless dimwit out there who believes that listening to a popular band will make them "hardcore."

Unlike what many of the other people here have said, false metal is NOT simply any band that you don't like. If I didn't like Iron Maiden (and just for the record I DO like them), does that give me the right to say they are false metal? No! And you know why? Because their music DOES come from the heart, and the performers DO have a strong passion for it.

It's the same with many other bands out there. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is false metal, even though it's true that many bands out there whose music DOES suck do play false metal.

I'm going to avoid listing some "false metal" bands to avoid controversy. However, a lot of the big bands on the list should be quite obvious if you're a big metal fan.

black metal

There are many variations of Black Metal. Some examples:
First Wave of Black Metal (aka Old School): A lot of similarities with Thrash Metal, but the Black Metal is obvious.
Second Wave of Black Metal: Modern-sounding BM.
Black Metal: There is no point in redefining it, since virtually every definition above this, has been dealing with that particular style of BM.
Raw Black Metal: usually very monotonous, unmelodic, with very bad production, and cheaply printed releases.
NSBM: Stands for Nationalist Socialist Black Metal. Is defined by the lyrics, as opposed to music. Lyrics usually deal with various forms of nationalism, racial supremacy, and hate. Often also incorporates such themes as paganism, and the war against Judeo-Christianity.
Folk Black Metal: Any Black Metal with folk melodies or instruments used. Sometimes deals with the same concepts as NSBM.
Viking Black Metal: Any Black Metal with lyrics about vikings. Sometimes uses folk elements.
Symphonic Black Metal: This form of BM is very far from the origins of the genre, often sounding like extreme metal (as opposed to BM), it is uncommon for bands in this category to use an orchestra, or separate orchestral instruments.
Un-Black Metal: Any Black Metal dealing with Christianity (in a positive manner).
Death/Black: There is no uniform definition of that, but basically anything that uses elements of death and black metal together.

There are various less-widespread forms of Black Metal, such as a mixing BM with other styles (Doom, Power, Speed, etc), but it would take too much time to go into such details.

First Wave of Black Metal: (early) Bathory
Second Wave of BM: Darkthrone, Burzum
Black Metal: Darkthrone, Nargaroth
Raw Black Metal: ...Aaaarrghh...,Hate Forest
NSBM: Lutomysl, Absurd (Ger)
Folk BM: Nokturnal Mortum, Finntroll, (late) Isengard (nor).
Viking BM: Ensiferum, (late) Bathory, (late) Isengard (nor).
Symphonic BM: Dimmu Borgir
Un-Black Metal: Antestor
Death/Black Metal: Belphegor, (early) Naglfar (Swe)
