Pastel Goth

Pastel goth (might include soft grunge or nu goth), is a new trend where usually girls (on Tumblr) will dye their hair pastel colors, wear hipster/vintage-looking clothing that vaguely) promotes goth images, and blend cutesy images/colors with skulls, inverted crosses, etc. They try to justify their look as gothic with a pastel color palette although it is more reminiscent of a lighter emo/scene look. Often looked down upon by many goths as posers (most pastel goths don't actually listen to goth music or enjoy its true elements). Also disliked by Nirvana fans because of their loose use of the term grunge to describe themselves.

Girl A: Dude, check out those cute faded lilac short shorts! Soo cute.
Pastel Goth: Yea totally! They'll go great with my Actual Pain sweater!

Mall Goth

A pathetic excuse for real gothic. They claim they are totally goth and try to dress as such, when they know nothing about the subculture.

Joe is a Mall Goth. He hangs out at the mall and claims he listens to the most "gothic" bands out there, when all he really listens to is nu metal and other mainstream music.

Glam Goth

a glam goth can be male or female, has a more unique fashion sense, they dress a little different than the tradition goth, they refence back to the old glam days(ziggy stardust,t-rex,velvet goldmine)combine with goths today or in the past, glam goths are more artsy,avant-garde wear brighter colors of clothes and make-up,they push androgyn to the limit, they care how they look all the time, most of them are straight, but act like they're bi(like most goths do)also glam goths lead the sex, drugs and rock n roll lifestyle to the fullest extent.

candy goth

They are generally cute girls who wear black gloths and mix in bright neon colors along with it.They generally like the "goth" music, metal rock, and stuff like that. These people are generally people who are happy and dont feel the need to be depressed or anti-social.Generally when you picture this girl she has pigtales,a black skirt and a tanktop with neon pink socks and boots. Most people consider them posers because they are ok with being themselfs and other friends besides goths...but those are the people who are the least poserish, because they are true to themselfs and do not care what people think of them...i give you my respect !!CHANGE FOR NO ONE!!!

Wow that gothgirls socks are brighter than a ravers room!!!
Well duh, she is candy goth.

novelty-goth

A Norwich UK word.
A synonym for mini-goths. In essence those children aged 12 and upwards who dress in (what they believe to be) gothic clothing, talk about slitting their wrists like it's a cool thing to do (the talking, not the slitting), and tend to listen to bands such as: Sum 41, Blink 182, HIM, The Rasmus, Slipknot, and anything else of that ilk.

Check out that kid in the black listening to HIM and talking about wrist-cutting. Now *THAT'S* a novelty-goth!

Goth rock

Goth rock is a sub-genre of post punk music which originated in the UK in the late 70s (specifically 1979).

The first goth song is said to be "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus because even though the song was supposed to be written tongue-in-cheek, the band performed it with naive seriousness and the audience understood it with seriousness.

Goth rock characteristics include a 4 / 4 post punk beat, a drum machine, baritone vocals (common in men, like Peter Murphy of Bauhaus and Andrew Eldritch of The Sisters of Mercy), flanging guitar used for atmosphere and a prominent bassline. Some goth bands use characteristics of tribal music in their work, too (see: Southern Death Cult and Stairs - Uncertain Journey by Christian Death).

Contrary to belief, goth has not "evolved" and throughout the decades, the sound has relatively stayed the same. However, other dark or spooky genres and bands have cropped up throughout those decades which commonly get called "goth". This is false as goth only specifically refers to bands within that genre, not any band that uses a "dark" image or "spooky" lyrical themes.

Bands like Marilyn Manson and EBM bands like God Module are commonly mistaken for "Goth" when they're part of different genres.

The sound for all three of these groups are completely different, therefore could not be considered to be part of the same genre.

It is common for a goth to listen to goth rock, darkwave, deathrock and post punk but they can enjoy genres like metal (symphonic and Gothic in particular), industrial, EBM and synth pop too, just as long as they realise that the latter list are not goth genres.
