Inspired by the use of this phrase in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, "buy-the-book" is used to communicate to the other party that there is a third party listening and disinformation is necessary.
When Amanda called her husband on speaker phone with her kids in the car, she asked for the by-the-book answer for whether the amusement park was open. He, of course, said it was closed.

The best thing to ever grace the planet. Remember the Dark Ages? That happened because there weren't enough books or people able to read them.
For a long time people valued books, but since the arrival of Internet, people have disregarded them in favor of browsing the Urban Dictionary.
