Diary chronicle

Diary chronicle – or diary chron – is a literary genre of stories and books that emerged as fictional diary-like posts on Facebook around 2013 and 2014 in South Africa.

The books tell chronicled tales of usually a young adult’s bizarre life. They are fast paced, written in a diary-like sense, narrate intense sex scenes, and contain shocking twists and turns. It is commonly the main characters chronicling their misdoings and relationships in the era of social media, blessers, blessees, slay queens/kings, players, and the drinking of expensive champagne and whiskey.

Diary chronicle stories usually start out as Facebook or blog posts and quickly amass a following in thousands. Lesego Maake’s Facebook page Diary of a Side Chick Makhwapheni has over 75 thousand fans. Mike Maphoto’s Facebook page Diary of a Zulu Girl has over 130 thousand followers.

The diary chronicle genre name was coined by publishing entrepreneurs Setlhodi Paul and Tiisetso Maloma.

Chronicles of Gnarnia

(noun, plural)

Records in any recordable form, of compelling events having taken place.

Not just any events, however - said events must be:

-outlandish
-fantastical
-neutral to bad
-difficult to believe for those not present
-able to be described as "gnarly" or "gnar-gnar"

Social Media is the most commonly used medium for the recording of such gnar events, but it is not reliant upon this medium. Journals and diaries are another common form.

Brian: that was a crazy show last night!

Rob: I know right? Can't believe we got out of there in time.

Brian: oh yeah we sure did. That swarm of rats seemed more ready to party than we were hahah

Rob: omg so gnarly dude. This is definitely going down in the Chronicles of Gnarnia.

Brian: lol already on it

Rob: shred the gnar
