An adjective that describes a lifestyle lived out by many small-town New Englanders. A prep hates to wear gaudy labels (such as Louis Vuitton) or slutty labels (such as Abercrombie & Fitch). It is a common misconception that Abercrombie & Fitch is the preferred clothing designer, but it's not. Classic designs by Lacoste, Ralph Lauren, Lilly Pulitzer, L.L. Bean, and J. Crew (for example) are where you can find a prep shopping. Vacation spots include all of the East coast (Florida, Nantucket, Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Maine, etc.) and some small mid-west towns (Colorado, Utah, etc.).
A prep usually goes to a preparatory school for college, whether it is boarding or day then they will most likely continue on to a well-to-do East coast school.
Sports favored by preppy people are tennis, golf, squash, sailing, field hockey, skiing, lacrosse, ice hockey, raquet ball (ie. Country Club sports and sports offered at school).
That girl with the pearls is very preppy in her Jack Rogers and Madra pants.
That boy in the docksiders is very preppy in his aqua blue Lacoste shirt.

I know youv heard it before but it is extremely true: preppy is not about what u wear it is about the lifestyle. Most preps are born preppy into a preppy family. the most preppy is βwaspyβ families (white anglo-saxon protestant), followed behind by catholics and jews, although i have seen many black, hispanic, asian etc preps too.
-PREPPY CLOTHING: Preppy stores are mainly the ones you can find in nordstrom or bloomingdales: lacoste, ralph lauren, and many others. North Faces are the newest jackets for preps, and abercrombie could be considered the "neo-prep" by some, but dont overbuy abercrombie. Hollister and Aeropostale is not preppy, but preps can own clothes from there. American Eagle can be preppy, but as abercrombie dont overbuy. For males, polos are a must, in many colors. Khakis, rope belts and bracelets, sandals, sweaters or north face fleeces, etc. Girls have a larger variety, included polos as well, tanks, khakis, fitting sweaters, ribbons, rope belts, sandals etc ( beleive me there are a LOT more)
-PREPPY AREAS: Most preps live in the northeast, but many can be found in California. Westchester, NY; Greenwich, CT, etc are places where many preps can be found. Most attend prep or boarding schools, yet many attend suburban public schools. They do well in school, which runs in their family, and go off to similar colleges as their parents, primarily ivy league
-PREPPY CARS: Preppy cars are important for they are the first impression in many cases. Preppy families should have at least three cars: An SUV, a sedan, and a sports car. Mercedes, BMW, Lexus ect make great SUVs and sedans, as well as sports cars. But for sports cars, its necessary to think out of the box. Porsches are popular for preps
-PREPPY ATTITUDE AND OVERALL LIFESTYLE: Preps have many friends but may not be the most popular in their school. They are not stuck up and find no need to brag, people already know they are rich. Prep dads are business executives and real estate investors. Mothers are usually working mothers, either involved in their husbands business or successful on their own (for example successful lawyers). They are NOT stuck up, as their children, but they enjoy to spend time with families similar to theirs. They are not unaware of their children's lives, yet they dont need to be too involved because their children are doing fine on their own.
-PREPPY SPORTS AND ACTIVITES: Preps play sports they can play their entire lives, tennis and golf at their country clubs with their family and family friends, as well as lacrosse or soccer at their schools. Girls can be cheerleaders, but its not necessary
-PREPPY PETS: Preps do NOT have small ugly dogs that they carry around with them. Usually preps hav medium sized white dogs (such as bichons or poodles) or large, dark furred dogs with their heads high (such as Great Danes).
-PREPPY HOMES: Preps live in large houses, with European style exteriors and neo-classic, antique interiors. They also have other houses, such as winter homes in the mountains or summer homes. Florida condos are a popular vacation spots for preps. Winter is spent skiing, in Colorado and the Alps; Spring break is spent in the Hamptons, or Florida, or other vacation spots. Summer is spent in Europe and at the country club. Family trips dominate parent trips (usually to vineyards) but they are popular too.
Overall, preps are the ideal person, in the ideal family and the ideal school. They are moderately rich, and will be rich when they grow up. Many have "old money", but still some dont. They have an attitude that is NOT stuck up, yet still hav an air of importance. Preppy Brand names, country clubs, and trips to preppy vacation spots are important. And ultimately bragging is unnecessary, if you really are preppy and rich, people will know.
Preppy Mother: come, son, your dad's out in the mercedes ready to go play golf at the club and he wants you to join us!

Concrete Definition of Preppy:
One who is stylish and spends a lot of money on their clothing. Typically dressed in Ralph Lauren Polo, Lacoste, and Lilly Pulitzer. A true prep goes to a prep school, be it a day school or a boarding school. Most of these schools are located on the East Coast. They are not religiously affiliated. There is no such thing as a true public school prep. Preppies are subtly flashy, and tend to purchase things for comfort and style. Silver jewelry is particularly common, as are pearls. Flip-flops and ribbon belts are must-have accessories, as well as real (or sometimes fake) pearl earrings. Preppies take good care of their nails, but do not get acrylic fakes. Many get their eyebrows waxed. Preppies strive always to appear to spend less time than they do on their appearance, and do not brag or draw attention to their achievements openly. Preppy clothes never truly go out of style, but are frequently replaced. Preppies love their khakis, especially males. They will pay three times as much for a polo player, alligator, or palm tree on their shirts. Common vacations include, but are not limited too: Massachusetts coast, skiing out west (it is more expensive), and Caribbean island vacations during the winter (also very expensive). Most preps have, in their life, skied, and played lacrosse, tennis, and golf. Preppiness is found in its truest form after several generations of wealth in the family. First-generation preps tend to be flashy. True Preparatory (Prep) schools have near 100 years of βexperience in educating young men/womenβ and nearly all of them send 100% of their graduates on to college. Preps tend to proceed to Ivy League, or other βbig-nameβ colleges. Their level of intelligence varies greatly. They may have, but do not need, trust funds.
Preppies value staying in touch, which is why many have cell phones. They claim to buy their more expensive items so that they βwill last.β (Examples are Oakley sunglasses, Columbia Sportswear and LL Bean outerwear, and Polo shirts.)
Preppies are not slutty, and do not wear American Eagle or Abercrombie, except for some of their sweaters. They focus instead on the more expensive brands, since they can and will pay 50-75 dollars for a short sleeve shirt. Preppies strive to wear different shirts each time they are around the same person. True preppiness can not be adapted, but it is a part of birthright. Wanna-bee Preppies never quite achieve what true preps are born with.
"She mixes pink and green like a true preppy"
"Their hair ribbons are so preppy."
"I dig the preppy style."

preppy- a true prep does not wear abercrombie and fitch, hollister, or american eagle.A true preppie always looks put together, clean cut, and crisp. We would never ever put on a slutty shirt from a and f. We like to dress to impress! like wearing clothes from ralph lauren polo, l l bean ect. we always have our colars popped up and most of the time have pearls around our necks. None of us would be caught dead in anything else. You might think that the kids at your school who wear a n f and hollister are preppy....but they are not. They are just trashy looking.
omg did you see kristie today? she was looking good in her pink ralph lauren polo with her colar popped up.

A prep is someone who lives in new england, summers in nantucket, martha's vineyard or block island, and usually goes to a private school. preps come from old money, generally their families are old time new england families. preps go to colleges like wesleyan, swarthmore, harvard, bowdoin, risd, wellesly, and other colleges of the type. they wear j.crew, have a northface ski jacket with lift tickets attatched, carry a nalgene with them everywhere, and dont wear a whole lot of makeup. they consider themselves to be liberals, but tend to be more on the conservative end of liberalism.
they wont admit they are rich, but they are-they just arent showy with their money, and will buy a jetta over a porsche or a crv over an escalade. generally, they go for quality, not size/showyness.
person 1: you look so new england prep today
person 2: yeah i didnt feel like hiding it today

Prep is as many of the people here have already said - classic, conservative, WASPy, tasteful, etc. What bothers me is the misconception that being "preppy" means being a snob. Snobs, by and large, are insecure middle class pricks. A real prep is confident enough in him/herself that he/she doesn't need to put others down for no reason. Preps are secure in who they are; they don't need flashy brand names to give them their self worth.
On a side note - Someone who is White, Anglo-Saxon, and Protestant is not necessarily a WASP; George Bush is a WASP, for example, while Bill Clinton is not.
A real prep wouldn't waste his time hanging with a snob.
