destroyer

Noun.

1. A medium-sized warship, usually with a displacement of between 3,500 and 6,500 tons. Larger than a Frigate, but smaller than a Cruiser. Primarily tasked with fleet air defense, most modern destroyers are equally capable in ASW (anti-submarine warfare). Not considered large enough to act as a flagship, but sufficiently large to carry out independent operations. The word "destroyer" comes from the ship's original task, to destroy smaller, faster torpedo boats before they could sink capital ships.

2. NATO standard designations for destroyers are: DD (gun destroyer), DDG (guided missile destroyer), and DDGN (nuclear-powered guided missile destroyer, discontinued in July 1975).

Most blue-water navies include at least a few destroyers.

The Destroyer

Some say he is a gift from God, and are honored to be in his inimitable presence. Others feel that he raises the sexual bar impossibly high, leaving any subsequent lover to settle for a dismal second place. The Destroyer is a man who takes the Shatner and levels up. He will ensure that only the finest quality sandwich fixins are used, replaces the classic mayo with miracle whip, and invites every Shatnerette in a 50 mile radius to participate in the festivities. If The Destroyer is involved the Shatner becomes a bologna and cheese pedal train of ecstasy.

I thought he was just going to Shatner me, little did I know I had met The Destroyer. There was so much miracle whip and so many feet, I’ve never experienced such orgasmic joy. Nothing will be the same after this. I guess that’s why they call him The Destroyer.

Destroyer

A Canadian Indie Pop Rock/Baroque Rock/European Blues band consisting of frontman Daniel Bejar (also of the bands The New Pornographers and Swan Lake) and has had varying members throughout the band's history. After releasing the 2006 album, "Destroyer's Rubies", Bejar stated that the personnel of that album (Ted Bois, Nicolas Bragg, Tim Loewen, Scott Morgan, Fisher Rose, John Collins, and Bejar himself)would remain the permanent band roster, excluding Collins and Rose, who played minor roles on the album.

Destroyer began as Daniel Bejar's solo project in 1996, which he started in his small home in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Initially, Destroyer gained little reception at all. By 2000, when Bejar collaborated with Carl Newman, Todd Fancey, Neko Case, and others to form The New Pornographers, Destroyer had already released 3 LP's. Though Bejar has only contributed to each of The New Pornographer's albums with merely 2-4 songs, his collaboration with them is possibly what gained him a bulk of his attention. I say bulk, because, though Destroyer had less than a cult following by the time The New Pornographer's first album, "Mass Romantic" was released, Bejar had still managed to form a full band and release a few albums.

Bejar is known for being very poetic and subliminal in his lyrics, and for having paragraphs and paragraphs of said lyrics in one song (example: "Rubies", on Destroyer's Rubies). Bejar will often write cryptic lyrics, and lyrics that at times may seem completely and utterly meaningless, though he usually has intent behind them.

In early 2008, Bejar collaborated with his girlfriend, a visual artist, Sydney Vermont, to form the duo, "Hello, Blue Roses." Aside from his minor collaborations with The New Pornographers, Swan Lake, and his project with Vermont, Bejar has remained more than faithful to Destroyer, releasing, as of 2008, 9 LP's, not to mention numerous EP's and demos. Destroyer typically only goes on tour to promote an album, and more often that not, performs primarily in bars, but also performs at indie music festivals, such as the annual Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago.

Destroyer has been respectfully compared to David Bowie, My Bloody Valentine, and Pavement; Bejar admits the band's influence from Pavement and the band, Guided By Voices.

Destroyer's 9 LP's, in order of when they were released:

> "We'll Build Them A Golden Bridge" - (1996)

> "Ideas For Songs" - (1997)

> "City of Daughters" - (1998)

> "Thief" - (2000)

> "Streethawk: A Seduction" - (2001)

> "This Night" - (2002)

> "Your Blues" - (2004)

> "Destroyer's Rubies" - (2006)

> "Trouble In Dreams" - (2008)

Destroyer

Often a less attractive friend who remains close in social situations, ready to break up an encounter between her girlfriend and a potential gentleman caller. Most often the Destroyer will barge in if her girlfriend is engaging in conversation with a man, and insist that they need to leave the party/bar.

Like the military definition of the Destroyer, the social scene Destroyer is a smaller, less significant ship that circles the larger boats of the fleet, to protect against air attacks or submarines.

Unlike the wing man, the Destoryer's male counterpart, the Destoryer's main function is not to aid the female necessarily, rather to thwart the male and concurrently assure that she won't be left to her lonesome. Thus while the wing man is selfless, the Destroyer is self serving.

With proper planning, a man can use his wing man to intercept the Destroyer, increasing the likelihood of uninterrupted conversation with the target.

Male 1: Hey, how did things go on Friday? I saw you hitting it off with Karen.

Male 2: Yeah, things were going well, and I think she was into me, but then the Destroyer came and insisted that the both of them had to leave. Wish you could have been there to intercept.
