An easy way to explain kompa is that it is the Haitian version or r&b. A beat with piano, drums, guitar, and sometimes with saxophones or trumpets. Characteristic features of KOMPA DRILL production include rap-talk-singing, Flow, “kata” (rim shot) (tresillo, live drums, (typically 80 to 120 beats per minute, or BPM), catchy short riff, Autotune, loops, 808 glides, ear-catching and singable melodies with manipulated Background vocal.
KOMPA DRILL uses replayed samples of older Kompa tracks by composing derivative version of the sample played live by an actual studio or session musician, thus giving it a nostalgic yet modern twist.
