Obelus

noun

1. a symbol (†) used as a reference mark in printed matter, or to indicate that a person is deceased.

2. a mark (– or ÷) used in ancient manuscripts to mark a word or passage as spurious, corrupt, or doubtful.

His use of the " obelus " to distinguish spurious verses, which made so large a part of his fame in antiquity, has rather told against him with modern scholars.

obelus

÷

The "dividing sign". Often used to represent the mathematical operation of division. Historically, it has also been used to represent subtraction in Northern Europe.

On Windows computers, pressing Alt+0247 on the number pad will produce an obelus. It is produced with Option+/ on Mac computers.

An obelus is used like this: 4÷2=2
