1. A.K.A. St. Petersburg, Leningrad.
City on the Neva river and Baltic Sea, RUSSIA founded by Peter the Great in 1703. Capital of Russia from 1712 until 1918. Though originally called Petersburg, the name of the city was changed to Petrograd in 1914, as the former name sounded too German. Renamed Leningrad in 1924, and St. Petersburg in 1991. A center of Russian culture, science, and architecture from the Baroque, Industral, and Soviet eras. Birthplace of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
