Pulled a Putin

To attempt something and totally fuck up, resulting in unanticipated, negative outcomes wildly beyond the immediate blast radius.

To believe one’s own bullshit for so long that one develops dangerous/foolish confidence, takes action, and spectacularly fails, devastating millions of people.

Uncle Vlad pulled a Putin by thinking he’d easily seize Ukraine, leading to the complete collapse of his country’s economy, the death of thousands of Russian soldiers, increased NATO spending, and the loss of his honorary Judo belt.

Ashli Babbitt pulled a Putin thinking she’d roll to D.C. and “protect” the Constitution on January 6th, 2021 — Biden was certified as President, she ended up getting shot in the chest, and the effort was declared a domestic terrorism event.
