Winze

A winze is a vertical or semi-vertical tunnel typically found in tunnel mining operations. Winzes are different from ordinary vertical shafts as they do not reach the surface. They are usually constructed for access to deeper levels of the mine.

Jim: Did you hear about what happened to Jake?

Alex: Yeah, I heard he fell down a winze while exploring an abandoned baryte mine. Apparently the mine was flooded and he probably drowned down there in the darkness. They haven't found his body yet.
