literally - messing about with, doing something without knowing how to do it and using trial and error, fiddling with, winging it, tampering with, jury rigging

He was faddling about trying to mend it without knowing what he was doing.
I can't get this to work, you have a faddle with it.
Stop faddling with that before you break it.
I cant make it fit properly so I'll have to faddle it.
