A person who lives in the Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey and is given to wearing unbuttoned flannel shirts with Lynyrd Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet tour shirts underneath. Most frequently sited in Southern Ocean County and environs. Known for yelling, "Freebird!" whenever they are in the audience at a live concert in the hope that there are other Skynyrd fans there that they can hook up with to drink beer and fight with later. To date, no band has actually ever played Freebird at the request of a Piney.
There's a bunch of pineys partyin' up at the forge tonight.

Southern New Jersey term for locals with a long history of living in the area-the "originals" some say. Direct decendants of the orginals families that settled the area. Many Piney have made a living off of the land by farming and hunting or off the water by claming, fishing. Some have been boat builders and wood carvers. Many have participated in the local blue grass music scene. Part of a rich historical tradition not understood or respected by some arrogant newcommers. I was a "city slicker" 40 years ago but those of us who respected the locals assimilated better. Pineys have plenty of reasons to be proud.
In the local cemeteries you will find generations of Piney family graves.

A person living in South Jersey's Pine Barrens in the rural towns of Chatsworth, South hampton, Whitesbogs, Browns Mills, Pemberton, tabernacle or whiting that don't affiliate themselves with more developed urban culture indicative of the tri-state area in which they live. Piney's typically looked rugged, rough around the edges, blonde white people and give off a hillbilly aura when around more secular and independent urbanites. Pineys are less sophisticated and scoff at upward social mobility because that isn't possible in rural NJ. Pineys indulge in activities conducive to their environment, such as: riding dirt bikes, canoeing, smoking pot all day, being uninformed on current topics, despite having internet access, all in on traditional family values, and general accessorizing within their bubble of ruraldom. Most make less than 50k a year since there isn't big business in Rural south jersey. Pineys can be generaly good people , but they are many times a victim of circumstance, which explains the drug escapades that plague their towns.
