An anachronistic temporal music genre similar to that of "proto-punk" & "proto-metal" as well as "vaporwave", but instead of defining progenitors for a specific genre or aiming to sound like a lost future influenced by late-80s capitalism and retrofuturism, it encapsulates all music that was ahead of its time period.
It can be somewhat subjective if an artist was ahead of its time, but music critics and journalists generally revere artists such as the Velvet Underground (alternative rock), Yung Lean (cloud rap), Silver Apples (electronic pop) and Brian Eno (post-punk / ambient) as predicting genres that would not exist until many years later.
"Have you heard the song 'Damned Flame' by Blast? It sounds like hardcore punk and speed metal yet it came out in 1973!"
"Wtf that's crazy I thought those were '80s genres"
"Yeah it's this thing called protowave! Music from the past that predicted the future"
