vatnik

Literally, a type of warm cotton-padded jacket, used by Soviet soldiers during Second World War.

In the billboards and postcards dedicated to the victory of USSR over Germans, Russian soldier often portrayed in vatnik jacket.

In 2011 the comic strip was launched as a parody on Sponge Bob, where Russian patriot was portrayed as anthropomorphic vatnik jacket.

Later, in 2014, vatnik became a pejorative for people loyal to Putin's regime and Russian domestic and foreign policy in general.

Typical vatnik supports Putin's fascist regime, supports war against Ukraine, calling USA a root of all evil, and calling himself a "russian patriot"

vatnik

Term, invented by Ukrainian nationalists in 2014 because of the events that occurred in the Crimea and Donbass. It's a stereotypical description of the Russian patriot, but in fact the term is nowadays used against any person who is neutral or positive about Putin/Russian government, even if he or she is not a patriot. Because of Ukrainian nationalists, who think that Russia is a backward country with a large percentage of poverty and a weak army, and not Ukraine itself in reality, word "vatnik" became overused weak insult without any value in it.

- Oh, common buddy, Putin is not that bad preside~
- WHAT DID YOU F**KING SAID, YOU VATNIK???!

Vatnik

Post 2016 republicans, conservatives and libertarians.

History of Vatniks is as follows:

For decades Russia was the Big Bad Bear that the US far (and centre) right hated and feared. But after the Fall of the USSR, Russia changed a lot. It went from hardline Soviet communism to a brief false spring of liberalization and normalization, which withered away when the Russian Mafiya managed to get their hands on almost all the state-owned resources (practically everything) and consolidate their rule as oligarchs. This is when Putin (ex KGB guy) came to power. He established a right-wing autocracy with an official State church (Russian Orthodox) which is the kind of government that right-wingers prefer.
So the rightwing oligarchs in the US, who are the backers/funders of the Republican party, now admire this new Russia. They admire its homophobia, its ethnic nationalism, its theocratic tendencies, its inequity, its rejection of the Soviet ideals of gender and race equality, and above all its fake democracy in which a dictator owns the media, the police, and a private army so as to crush all dissent and elections are a farce. Ron de Santis would just love to be Putin, Trump openly expressed his admiration for Putin. Russia, once the world centre of the Communist International, is now the world centre of the New Far Right International.
If Trump was still president America would be supplying arms to Russia.
