Spongy sticky stuff that you munch ad nauseam in order to help you avoid some unwise habit or procedure. Nicorette comes to mind as an example.

Violette Beauregard had a gum-chewing obsession; I suppose that there is a special gum to help someone with that addiction, but what good would chewing gum-eschewing gum do to sure your gum-chewing addition if it means that you're still chewing gum???
